One question buyers often skip over is where the footage actually goes after it's recorded, and whether keeping it means paying a monthly fee. It comes down to two models: local storage on an NVR or DVR you own outright, or cloud storage through a subscription service. Here's how the two actually compare.
How Local (NVR/DVR) Storage Works
Our PoE camera systems, including the Uniview and Hanwha Vision NVR kits, record straight to a hard drive built into the recorder itself. There's no monthly fee: once you own the system, you own the footage and everything it takes to store it. How much history you can keep back depends on your hard drive size and how many cameras (and at what resolution) are feeding it, but a well-sized system typically holds several weeks of continuous recording. The tradeoff is that the footage lives in one physical place, so it's worth keeping the recorder somewhere secure and, ideally, out of sight.
How Cloud Storage Works
Wi-Fi cameras like our Reolink lineup often pair with a cloud plan: footage uploads to a remote server instead of (or in addition to) a local drive. That means you can pull up recordings from anywhere without needing to be on the property or connect to the recorder directly, and your footage survives even if the camera itself is stolen, damaged, or destroyed. The tradeoff is an ongoing subscription cost, and depending on your internet plan, continuous cloud uploading can add up in data usage.
Which Should You Choose?
For most permanent installations built around a PoE/NVR system, local storage is the more cost-effective long-term choice since there's no recurring fee, and it works well as long as the recorder itself is kept secure. Cloud storage tends to make more sense for renters, temporary setups, or anywhere the peace of mind of an offsite backup matters more than avoiding a monthly cost. Plenty of properties end up using a mix of both: local storage as the primary system, with cloud backup reserved for a camera or two at the highest-priority entry points.
